Preparing timber formwork for concrete. now we have a base area ready. it should, in all cases, be 300mm longer and wider than your shed floor and as level as possible. using the diagram below follow the instructions for an above ground base. dimensions and layout for a shed base. A concrete shed base is the strongest type of shed foundation. it is at the heavier end of the work you will do to build your shed. this article will help you to decide if you really need such a heavy duty solution or if something a bit lighter and simpler to install would work just as well.. Concrete shed base or gravel shed base?which is best? it all depends. both foundations have their pros and cons of course. which foundation works best depends on your situation, land and needs, not necessarily on the foundation itself..
100mm will be fine, so about 1.2 m3 concrete, shed timber framed. ready mixed concrete would be easier, as by hand your looking at around 2 tons of ballast, might be a smidgen more, & 15 or 16 bags cement.. Both paved (pictured) and concrete shed bases require the support of a sub-base. this sub-base is made from an mot type 1 hardcore (consisting of crushed or broken bricks, blocks and stone) compacted with an earth rammer or a vibrating plate compactor.. So you will need 2 cubic metres of ballast for the concrete plus whatever you use for the hardcore. rubble used for the hardcore will have voids that need filling up. ballast will do this although i prefere skalpings because it forms a firmer base. for a shed i'd work on 9-12" of hardcore and 6-9" of concrete..
